Edwards’ Resolution #20

download20. Resolved, To maintain the strictest temperance in eating and drinking.

This resolution is fairly simple to translate – SELF-CONTROLnAT THE BUFFET AND PUB!!! I find it interesting that Edwards does not leave it with over-eating at the Chinese buffet, but he also adds drinking. I don’t think he had sodas, tea, coffee or water in mind, though we do perhaps need to control the caffeine intake. I was once rebuked by a man because I had a Big Gulp Mountain Dew – and he used this resolution as his basis!

I think the most important thing here, whether it be food or drink, is before we indulge or imbibe we need to pause and ask, “Why?” Does this “physical fuel” glorify God or am I feeding the fleshly appetite?  Consider the following:

Zechariah 7:4-6 – [4] Then the word of the LORD of hosts came to me: [5] “Say to all the people of the land and the priests, When you fasted and mourned in the fifth month and in the seventh, for these seventy years, was it for me that you fasted? [6]  And when you eat and when you drink, do you not eat for yourselves and drink for yourselves?”

And though the context is different (Lord’s Table), the principle is the same:

1 Corinthians 10:31 – “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

And it seems a bit ironic that the last grace in the fruit of the “Spirit” is “self”-control! And yet, there it is – implying we need to be filled with the Spirit in order to control self. So…

May you exercise self-control in all things today for the glory of God!
