Edwards’ Resolution #18

download18. Resolved, To live so, at all times, as I think is best in my most devout frames, and when I have the clearest notions of the things of the gospel, and another world.

I think a good paraphrase is: Love the gospel and live for heaven. Or as the Apostle Paul wrote:

1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.[Colossians 3:1-4]

Martyn Lloyd-Jones said that we need to preach the gospel to ourselves every day. I find this is true especially when things are going well. We are more apt to think on Christ and our dependence on God when things are not going well from our perspective. However, we tend to become apathetic towards the things of God when we feel no need for Him, when things are comfortable and life is easy. Of course, we must take care that we guard our hearts from a “woe is me” attitude – a perspective that considers your life to nothing but suffering — as well as a “power of positive thinking” attitude – everything is ok when in truth everything is not.

For all of these errant views and perspectives, we need the gospel daily. This is at the heart of what Jesus meant when He commanded the believer – the believer – to “deny himself and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” [ Luke 9:23] This is in fact the test of having truly followed him, believed in him, and trusted him. We continue following, believing, and trusting. Our focus as disciples should be on loving God and others. After all, heaven will be entirely “selfless.”
