The Blessing of Children

Posted: Tuesday, January 14, 2014 in Pastoral

Yesterday brought a gracious and tender reminder from our Lord concerning our calling as parents. One family I have been introduced to over the past month witnessed the home going of their 18 year-old son following a traffic accident in December. Another acquaintance’s 6 year-old son was diagnosed with leukemia. Though my daughters are grown and on their own, both of these incidents still caused me to reflect.

God has given us our children – and they are a great blessing. But with that blessing comes the tremendous responsibility to model Christ for them, to be good stewards of the blessing, to rear them in spiritual instruction and practice. While we celebrate one son’s home going, we do so only because of his testimony in Christ. His parents can be comforted because they sought to be good stewards of that which God had given to them for a time. The parents of the younger boy will experience strength through the illness that can ony come for the Holy Spirit.

My prayer is that we as parents would be strengthened today in our calling and that we would be shining examples of Christ to our children. May they see Christ and His church as satisfactory and not the things of this earth – because the things of this earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace when our eyes are on Jesus.

And pray for God’s grace and strength for the Gauley’s in KY and the Ellsworth’s in TN.
