The Gift of Gifts

Posted: Wednesday, December 25, 2013 in Valley of Vision

O Source of all good,

What shall I render to the for the gift of gifts,
aaathine own dear Son, begotten, not created,
aamy Redeemer, proxy, surety, substitute,
aahis self-emptying incomprehensible,
aainfinity of love beyond the heart’s grasp.

Herein is wonder of wonders:
aahe came below to raise me above,
aawas born like me that I might become like him.

Herein is love;
ccwhen I cannot rise to him he draws near on
aaawings of grace,
aato raise me to himself.

Herein is power;
aawhen Deity and humanity were infinitely apart
aahe united them in indissoluble unity,
aaathe uncreated and the created.

Herein is wisdom;
aawhen I was undone, with no will to return to him,
aaand no intellect to devise recovery,
aahe came, God-incarnate, to save me
aaato the uttermost,
aaas man to die my death,
aato shed satisfying blood on my behalf,
aato work out a perfect righteousness for me.

O God, take me in spirit to the watchful shepherds,
aaaand enlarge my mind;
aalet me hear good tidings of great joy,
aaaand hearing, believe, rejoice, praise, adore,
aaamy conscience bathed in an ocean of repose,
aaamy eyes uplifted to a reconciled Father;
aaplace me with ox, ass, camel, goat,
aaato look with them upon my Redeemer’s face,
aaaand in him account myself delivered from sin;
aalet me with Simeon clasp the new-born child
aaato my heart,
aaembrace him with undying faith,
aaexulting that he is mine and I am his.

In him thou hast given me so much
aaathat heaven can give no more.
