Edwards Resolution #6

Posted: Tuesday, November 12, 2013 in Resolutions

download6. Resolved, To live with all my might, while I do live.

Here I believe we see Edwards’ resolved to have an eternal impact on his family, his church, and his culture. He would not neglect the truth that we are to live as Paul wrote to the Ephesians, “in the strength and the power of His might” (6:10). It is simply his intentional, mindful approach to live “in the world but not of the world.”

God created us to live – to live in the here and the now. He instructed that we are to love Him with all of our heart, mind, and strength. We are to live that out amidst our neighbors – in the world. I equate this resolution to that “arrogant” statement by Paul: “Be imitators of me – AS I AM OF CHRIST” (1 Cor. 11:1). This does not contradict his imperative found in Eph. 5:1, “Be imitators of God.” Both reflect Paul’s desire to live in the strength and the might of the Lord that his and his might would be to live to and for the Lord at all times. Hence, in every moment, we are to live with all our strength and might to glorify God in Christ through the power of the Spirit.

To live with all your might, while you do live. Actively and passively we live each day as fallen people in a fallen world, We have been and will be redeemed and all creation eagerly awaits final redemption, Until then, we are to live with gospel purpose in the muck and mire of humanity. We are to fulfill our calling to bring reconciliation between sinful man and holy God. We do so as we are enable by the Spirit of God.

That’s what Edward’s meant in Resolution #6, methinks. Is your purpose this day to have an eternal impact in every facet of your life?
