Edwards’ Resolution #3

downloadResolved, If ever I shall fall and grow dull, so as to neglect to keep any part of these Resolutions, to repent of all I can remember, when I come to myself again.

You have probably heard of lists of rules and regulations that have Rule #3 stated as follows: When in doubt, see Rule #1. That is what Edwards does in Resolution #3. He sees the need to remind himself of Resolution #1 – which focused on living life to the glory of God. How quickly we forget and need to be reminded, time and time again. Each day we should begin anew, asking God’s wisdom and Spirit to deny self, take up our cross, and follow Him. We do fall, and in His grace He picks us up. We do grow dull, though in this we see the depravity of sin. How can a heart grow dull when it considers the supremacy of Christ and the power of the Cross?

We fall when we consider our own interests before God and others (ask Eve), and we grow dull when we neglect the spiritual disciplines that God has provided for us. Dullness comes when we refuse to listen to what God says. Remember the commissioning of Isaiah:

[8] And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.” [9] And he said, “Go, and say to this people: “‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’ [10] Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and blind their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.” (Is. 6:6-10 ESV)

Jesus repeats these words to His apostles, thankful that their ears had been unstopped and they were able to discern the parables. Paul repeats these words, thankful that the Holy Spirit revealed these things to Isaiah and the truth that the gospel would go forth to all nations. The truth is that we need the illumination of the Holy Spirit in order to not grow dull concerning truth and we need the Holy Spirit’s power to keep us from falling. If we walk by the Spirit we will not gratify the desires of the flesh (Gal. 5:16).

When you fall, come to your senses and repent. If you have grown dull, repent – see #1!
